David is a faithful servant to Saul but Saul is eaten with suspicion and hatred against David. God is with David and this adds fuel to the fire of Saul's hatred. Saul sends David away from the court and we see in this the providence of God for his popularity grows. Behind his popularity is the smile of God. In this passage we see Saul as a selfish manipulator of people, fixated by hate and fear, he even marries his daughter to David in an attempt to bring about David's downfall.
